South End Subterranean

This was a throw away basement in the south end with low ceilings and difficult plumbing. The owner is an ancient Greek and Roman scholar teaching at one of the local Universities, so the fact that he desired a deep communal tub and sauna was not surprising. Creating a feeling of openness in such confined quarters was the challenge. The solution is to give the bathroom wall a receding curve, use one continuous flooring material (marble of course), and use a back lit translucent wall and door. The tub is site built using wacky wood, waterproof stucco and tile. The tub seating is similar to a diner booth, which had some significance to the young couple.

Sotiris Sotiropolous laid the marble

The sauna has an electric heater and is lined with 3/4 T&G red cedar from Selectwood of Portsmouth NH
